"Date: Mon May 7, 2001 8:45 am My baby took his life not quite a year ago while withdrawing from Prozac... At first I was so angry at God... Why? He had never been suicidal, just depressed, but I worried about him because my husband has suffered depression all his life. He was such a good boy - an honor student, attending a gifted and talented class at his local jr high school. He always looked out for the underdog. He had such a sense of humor, and was working towards his Eagle Scout Merit Badge. He never wanted to be on the drug, and finally decided to withdraw on his own. I was aware of his intent, and knew he was tapering off. I really hadn't any reason to think the drug was dangerous, and I had complete confidence in our family doctor.... He was fourteen years old at the time he took a gun and shot himself in the head... After several months of anguish and searching for an answer, I now understand. I am determined to spend the rest of my life in bringing these guys down. My baby's death will not be in vain. (He always hated me calling him "my baby", but he was my youngest.. he'll always be my baby). I will do everything in my power to re-educate the masses. I will breath my last breath fighting for this cause if that's what it takes.... And my husband... he was prescribed Paxil by the same doctor. After learning about the dangers of the SSRI drugs, I bought Dr. Tracy's tape. He tried to go off and went wacko. The experience frightened him so badly, that he went back to his full dosage - only 20 mg. per/day. He is too frightened to try again.. I fear for him. I fear if he doesn't try again, he'll be as messed up as poor Joey's husband. He is not the same man, and I have to keep reminding myself that it's not his fault... If it's anyone's, it's mine... A few years ago I was so frustrated with him and his depression I threatened to leave him if he didn't get some help.... I was so ignorant.... I just didn't know.... I am no longer mad at God - this is not of him. He loves his children. He is aware of our suffering. I am as certain of this as I know the sun will come up again tomorrow. He is aware of you, but he wants you to come to him. Talk with him and he will walk with you. You will make it out of this hellish nightmare. Be Brave. Be Strong. Know that there are so many that love and care about you. Just prior to the wedding my wife told me that she "My father committed suicide by hanging himself June 28, 2001 after taking Prozac for 10 days. He had never had any mental illness and had never been suicidal. The Prozac was a sampler from the cardiologist who also gave him a prescription for Prozac. The cardiologist found nothing wrong with his heart. He took it for 10 days before his death. I believe it was on June 26, 2001 he called me and he sounded unlike I have ever heard him. He sounded nervous, desperate, and jittery. He told me that he wanted to come off the Prozac because it made him feel terrible. He said that his doctor said that he could simply stop taking it. I said “Wait dad, are you sure that is what he said,” he said “Yes, he (doctor) said that I have not been on it long enough for it to hurt” Two days later he killed himself. My father had a lot of friends; everybody felt that this was totally unlike him. No one could believe it. I believe that the drug is dangerous for some people and that the cardiologist should not have been prescribing antidepressants, which are outside his normal practice. There was no warning from the doctor regarding this possible reaction to the drug. Growing up if a western movie had a hanging on it my dad would change the channel. I recall saying one time. "We were watching that dad" he responded with "I saw a movie where a man got hung one time as a kid and I had nightmares about it, I can not imagine a more horrible death." My father hung himself. My father would not have chosen to die in this method. He had just finished his first brand new house (at 72), he and I built the cabinets out of African mahogany. There were list of things to do all over his shop. He was not planning on dying. I think that the cardiologist, with inadequate warning and supervision, prescribed a drug that the manufacturer knows is dangerous to certain percentages of the population." "Extreme fatigue - fall asleep at 7:00pm - then wake up with insomnia at 2am - Prozac." "After being on 20mg Prozac for about 6 weeks noticed tips of fingers on right hand are numb for up to about 1 hour each morning. Also numb with use of knife while eating, at any time of day. Also when using computer mouse and keyboard."
