Joint pain. What can be done for joint pain? Omega 3 fatty acid used by President George Bush. When it comes to the onset of joint pain, should you run to your doctor or try an Omega 3 fatty acid first?

Joint Pain

August 1, 2005 - President George Bush physical examination results and what he is taking for specific body symptoms. "He smokes a cigar now and then, takes a daily multivitamin, low-dose aspirin, Omega 3 fatty acids linked to lower heart disease and glucosamine/chondroitin to ease stiffness in his joints."

My research on joint pain turned out to be a personal one. Around April 2004, I began having pain in the Achilles tendon on both legs. The tendons were sore to touch and I could feel knots in them.

The pain was pronounced when I got out of bed in the morning or when I did not have weight on my feet for an hour or more and then stood.

As I walked it would slowly go away.

During the next few months the pain increased and swelling increased as well.

The first thing I tried was to buy new shoes. A new pair of “high dollar” tennis shoes helped if I walked much but the mornings and sitting and then standing would still bring the pain.

A few months later I could begin to feel the pain in the ankles as well.

I then tried a diet change by getting rid of salts. No change.

It was around November 2004, I started taking organic barley juice and other organic nutrients and I got out of bed one morning and there was no pain in the tendons or the joints.

Within two days however, the pain returned once again. No matter how much barley etc I took, the joint pain and tendon pain would not go away. It seemed to be getting worse.

I reconstructed once again what I had changed in November 2004 and realized I took Omega 3 one day in November.

January 15, 2005 I took Omega 3 and made notes of how the pain was and all changes that took place.

January 16, 2005 when I got out of bed I could only feel a very slight pain and the tightness in the tendons was all but gone as well.

I did not take Omega 3 from January 17 through January 23 2005 and the pain in the joint and the pain in the tendons slowly came back.

January 24, 2005 I started the Omega 3 once again and the morning of January 25 I had no pain in the joint or tendons once again.

The evening of January 25 I looked for news articles about arthritis and joint pain using Omega 3. There were hundreds of articles and hundreds of clinical trials showing success with Omega 3.

August 1, 2005. - After reading about President George Bush's use of Omega 3 for joint pain, it made me think to look at this page once again. I have not had the pain mentioned above for months!

My normal research procedure is to throw out all articles and clinical trials done by a company that sells Omega 3. A conflict of interest and misleading results can come from supplement companies as well as a pharmaceutical company.

One thing came to light with the remaining clinical trials and or articles: Omega 3 works for many people that suffer from joint and or tendon pain but not for all.

One thing about Omega 3, all Omega 3 is not the same.

Many people from this site have used Omega 3 for weight loss and during a taper off antidepressant medication. Not all had the same results.

I do know our individual DNA has a lot to do with who responds to Omega 3 and who does not. This also includes; who needs to take a higher dosage of Omega 3 to achieve a desired results and who does not need the higher dosage.

The DNA aside, what makes some still respond and others not? Frankly, it is the type of Omega 3 being taken.

Omega 3 needs to have two items to be effective. EPA and DHA.

There is an interesting study using Omega 3 to treat depression and bipolar. It proves out the need for EPA and DHA in the correct amounts to achieve desired results.

Author/Link Condition Studied total # of patients; placebo control? Fish oil dose (grams) EPA/DHA (grams) Outcome
Stoll, 1999 Bipolar, recently in remission 80/placebo 9.6 grams   Relapse rate sharply reduced in O-3 group
Keck, 2003
(pending; see preliminary report)
Bipolar 120/placebo   6 grams EPA No difference from placebo
Nemets, 2002 Depressed 20/placebo   2 grams EPA Highly significant benefits by week 3
Peet, 2002 Depressed 70/placebo   1, 2, and 4 grams EPA only 1-gram group did best; 2 gms did not improve, 4 gms trended better
Zanarini, 2003 "Borderline" 30/placebo   1 gram EPA Decreased aggression, depression (if use particular statistical tweaking)
Marangell, 2003 Depressed 35/placebo   2 grams DHA At 6 weeks, a trend but not significant benefit (details)
Su, 2003 Depressed 28/placebo Paper describes "9.6 grams" of omega-3s, but by my calculations...đ 4.4 grams EPA/ 2.2 grams DHA Significant benefits versus placebo by week 4, bigger yet by week 8
Chiu, 2003 Depressed, pregnant case report   4 grams EPA/ 2 grams DHA Improvement by week 4, better yet by week 6
Sagduyu, 2003
( letter, Psychiatric Times, March 2003 pg 9)
Bipolar 19/ no placebo   0.5 to 6 grams less irritability

(scroll to page 6, center column)
Bipolar (one; no placebo-- but look at prior course of illness)   6 grams EPA see the life chart results
Case report and testimonial Bipolar (one, no placebo)   2.2 grams EPA, 1.8 grams DHA plus Flaxseed oil read his glowing account

It is also vital a person only take Omega 3 that is a pharmaceutical grade. A pharmaceutical grade Omega 3 has removed the mercury and other toxins found in fish.

The best Omega 3 I have found that has the right amount of EPA, DHA and is also a pharmaceutical grade can be found here; Omega 3 Supreme Click Here (Opens new browser window)

Remember, start with 2 capsules a day and take them in the morning. After 1 week if you do not feel the desired changes, increase to 4 a day. Two in the AM and two before 4 PM. You can increase the amount of Omega 3 daily to six if needed.
