Dyslexia The more I read about special interest being involved with our children's health and life the ..... I can't put in writing in this public forum what I am really feeling. People magazine in July 2003 ran an article about Tom Cruise and the dyslexia he suffered with as a child and young man. Good piece overall. July 21, 2003 IC the Web Site of Wales runs an article of how "Tom Cruise has upset members of the dyslexia community by claiming in an interview that Scientology had cured his dyslexia." J. Thomas Viall, executive director of the International Dyslexia Association states " There is not a lot of science to support the claims that the teachings of Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard are appropriate to overcoming dyslexia." Had a story not appeared on Yahoo today, July 22, 2003, I probably would not have had a second thought of the above story. The Yahoo story titled, "Dyslexia Therapy Gets Kids' Brains on Track" begins with, "After only three weeks of intense, specialized reading instruction, dyslexic children started to exhibit brain activity patterns that matched those seen in normal readers." These test and results were verified with fMRI scans. Not that I believe you can tell if a person is dyslexia by an fMRI scan but the medical community holds this in high regard. The interesting thing about their study was they removed the dyslexia problem from these young students by working with words "language", not medication. Now, why would J Thomas Viall blast Tom Cruise? The Web Site of the International Dyslexia Association® explains it a little. They want your money and the governments money for grants. What solutions have they come up with? What have they done to improve this condition? None, to both questions. Where does this leave us? Having a look at what Tom Cruise used, The Basic Study Manual, by L Ron Hubbard. The contents of the book include: Why Study - The Barriers to Study - Understanding Words - Dictionaries - Demonstration - Word Clearing - Learning How to Learn. The study methods of L Ron Hubbard have been published for over 30 years now. This is not a new science like we are being led to believe by the July 22, 2003 article. What about psychiatry and their cure? "We need to take all of our copies of the DSM and throw them into the sea," cries Edward Shorter, lead author of the article and a professor of the history of medicine at the University of Toronto in Canada. "There are such fundamental flaws that the whole thing needs to be rethought. We need to have indications that correspond to natural, underlying disease processes."
